Week #2 Rehash

Biggest Thing Week #2 taught us:  Week #1 means almost nothing when compared to the big picture.

  • Big bounce-back wins for the Jets, Colts, Bengals, Chargers, Broncos, Eagles, Falcons.
  • Big “fall-back” losses for the Patriots, Ravens, Titans, Giants.

The 2-0′s: Green Bay, Miami, Kansas City, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Houston, New Orleans

The 0-2′s: Buffalo, Minnesota, Cleveland, Detroit, Dallas, Carolina, St. Louis, San Francisco

Pretty Impressed With:

  • Michael Vick – left bodies strewn about Ford Field and refused to be intimidated by a pass rush that was, for a half, pretty brutal
  • Jahvid Best – if this continues, the Lions my have, gulp, “Offensive Balance”
  • Steelers D – Who needs “Offensive Balance”, anyway?? Just flat out awesome through two weeks and playing with a chip on their collective shoulder
  • Chicago Bears – Even Bears fans are shocked at yesterday’s win.  Jay Cutler has been quite good the first two weeks of the season.
  • Matt Schaub – this game appeared over.  Schaub brought them back.  Almost 500 yards passing yesterday.  Barring significant injury to Andre Johnson (MRI pending) this team is a playoff team – I’m calling it now.  This division is winable for this team this year.
  • Randy Moss - unbelievable catch.
  • Jets D – especially in the second half
  • Tom Brady – Although….more for THIS than THIS

NFL Lingering Questions:

  • How much trouble is Brad Childress in??  He mortgaged his job to get Brett Favre back, then traded his second best passer away.  The O line has regressed the past two seasons.  The passing game is broken and this team lacks an identity.  If they miss the playoffs, he’s got to be gone.  Good news for Minnesota?? The D has been pretty good, Adrian Peterson has been pretty good and they have a possible Week #3 “Get Well” game coming against the Lions.  Two weeks ago, it was hard to imagine a scenario where Minnesota could have been in a must-win situation – that’s where they are this week.
  • How much trouble is Wade Phillips in?? No offensive balance in two weeks.  The O line is a mess.  They don’t run the ball particularly well.  Passing game has all kinds of weapons, but Romo is running for his life.  On the upside, the D is still decent, they DO have weapons, and most people think they’re oodles better than the Vikings.  I still think this is a playoff team but they’re staring at a Week #3 game @Houston…..could be big trouble for the Cowboys.  Teams that start 0-3 just don’t make the playoffs.
  • How much does it suck to be Andy Reid?? His hand-picked successor to Donovan McNabb crapped the bed in the pre-season, and looked awful for a half against the Packers.  All Micheal Vick has done is leave bodies in his wake as he’s rushed for 140ish yards and passed for another 350 more.  Reid says there’s no QB controversy in Philly – I agree.  Micheal Vick should be the starter.

SCFFL News and Notes:

  • The season is two weeks old, have we learned anything?? Nope.  It’s probably a little early to make definitive statements about “Haves” and “Have Not” kind of teams.  Although, the one definitive statement I’d make is that Mr. Klein can’t be too happy about the way things have started in Laker Nation.  The Ryan Grant loss looms large for the Lakers but, on the whole, the season is still young.  You could, perhaps, categorize the 2-0 Shooters as a bit of a mild surprise but not so much so that you’d do THIS.
  • Following our theme above; big bounce back wins for the Destroyers, Crush, and Rage; big fall-back losses for the Shamrocks, Blitz, and Muskies.  The Ryan Matthews injury could be a big deal depending on severity, etc.  Also important to note the Andre Johnson injury referenced above as items that could have big impacts at an early juncture in the season.
  • Speaking of the League Scoring Average:  scoring through the first two weeks of the season is down a bit on a year-over-year basis.  Last season’s average was a very respectable 62 points per game.  Average through two weeks in 2010:  56.7.  I’m not really sure what this little factoid gets you, short of the notion that it’s a mildly interesting little factoid.

Week #3 Preview:

  • 4 NFL Games to Watch: Cowboys @ Texans; Falcons @ Saints; Titans @ Giants; Packers @ Bears (Monday)
  • SCFFL Game of The Week: Shooters @ Shamrocks

Enjoy Week #3, kids!!! SSSSSSSSSEEEEEE YYYYAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!1

Week #1 Rehash

An interesting Week #1 in the books, kids – The Commish’s observations below:

NFL News:

  • Impressive wins turned in by (in no particular order):
  1. New England Patriots:  Make no mistake – this was a beating.  The score was 31-3 at one point and only garbage time allowed the final score to be as close as it was.
  2. Houston Texans:  Finally over the hump called “The Indianapolis Colts”, if the running game is truly this good the Texans will compete not just for a playoff spot, but will be a legitimate AFC contender.
  3. Tennessee Titans:  So much for the “New & Improved” Oakland Raiders – the team some called a dark horse to win the AFC West.  The Commish knows when eating his words is an appropriate thing to do:  Vince Young – yes, THAT Vince Young, has become a mature, seasoned NFL quarterback.
  • Astounding losses turned in by (in no particular order):
  1. San Francisco 49ers:  Would have hated to be in 49ers film room today while Mike Singletary uses every synonym for “ass-whoopin’” he can think of on the plane ride home.  Good thing for the Niners it was a short flight.
  2. Dallas Cowboys:  You mean to tell me that Roy Williams finally made a game altering play, and it was called back on a holding penalty? See Lions’ fans – there IS a God.
  3. Indianapolis Colts:  See “Houston Texans” above.  This just in Arian Foster was just seen running through Peyton Manning’s house.  Indy’s D still hasn’t caught him.
  4. Detroit Lions:  I’d go into detail here but it’s, somewhat, a family show.
  5. NY Jets:  Nice offense.  Really nice offense.

SCFFL News:

  • So much for draft preparation, I guess:
  1. Only 3 QBs pass for 300 yards or more (Manning, Cutler, Palmer)  Two of these QBs lost – so much for the “passing” NFL.
  2. Only 4 players rush for 100 yards or more – and one was a QB (Michael Vick)
  3. 9 players had more than 100 receiving yards.  Consider the names “Brandon Lloyd”, “Mark Clayton”, “Austin Collie”, and “Matt Forte” among your NFL leaders in receiving yards.
  • Week’s most impressive win:  South Lyon Shamrocks.  Probably the most impressive win for this franchise in two seasons.  They got younger, and much better than a year ago.  They scored XX points in a week where most teams struggled to post what has been considered an average point total.  This team is stacked if Hakeem Nicks becomes the legitimate #1 WR in New York.
  • Week’s most surprising loss:  Chesterfield Crush.  The Crush were never in this game and got essentially nothing from anyone in the lineup.  It’s far too early to panic – there’s a lot of talent on this team.  One simply wonders if they exhausted their good fortunes last season.
  • The SCFFL.com website is up and running – I’ll be using this site as the communications hub for the League and will be working on adding additional features as time goes on.  Check it out and leave comments on the site or send me an e-mail to provide some feedback.

In honor of one of the more remarkable offensive performances I’ve seen in my lifetime as a U of M football fan.
I’m honestly not sure what else you can say about this except “Wow”.  Nearly 900 yards of offense in two games, two wins against respectable, if not pretty good, opponents.
It’s amazing what two games has done to the outlook on that entire program.  They’ll be 5-0 going into the MSU game…..we’ll see what happens from there.

A New Season Begins – and Other Stuff
